Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup 2013

Saturday September 28th was a very wet and windy day on the west coast but that didn’t stop a dedicated group of 30 volunteers to participate in the 20th year of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. The Surfrider Vancouver Island chapter registered a clean up Sombrio Beach within the Juan de Fuca Provincial Park. This year we removed 101 lbs of garbage of the shoreline. Debris found included a tire, aluminum cans, and camping equipment. With funding provided by BC Parks for the event we had some snacks and beverages for the event, as well The Stick in the Mud cafe in Sooke donated hot coffee and made us up some delicious baked goods for the afternoon.John Horgan the MLA for the Juan de Fuca area came out and braved the wet weather as well! A big thanks needs to go out to the UVIC Parks Club, they came out to help with the event and made up most of the volunteers for the day! As well Luke Clarke the Senior Park Ranger for the Juan de Fuca area was a huge help bringing a wheel barrow and dolly to help bring supplies down to the beach and bring debris back up the trail, as well as dispose of the debris we picked up during the event. Check out the photos below!Interested in getting involved in future clean ups? Check out our website Calendar, we host monthly cleanups all over Southern Vancouver Island on the second Sunday of each month.
