Volunteer Spotlight - Lynn Wharram

How long have you volunteered with SFVI? Since 2013.
Why did you become involved? I wanted to make a difference and saw this as an opportunity to find out how.
What are you most excited about working on with SFVI in 2017? More beach cleanups! I love cleaning beaches to the point where it has become a bit of an addiction. I can’t say no when someone asks for our help to cleanup a beach. We have started working with more youth and we are expanding our remote cleanups and finding new areas to clean!
What’s your favourite outdoor activity? Since I work in an office all day, I enjoy ANY time I get to spend outside, but my all-time favourite thing is to go for a run in the rain!
What is the #1 thing you are doing to save our oceans? Besides cleaning beaches, I refuse to use single use plastic! I find SO much single use plastic on beaches. This includes water bottles, six-pack rings, straws, balloons, cutlery, and more. All of these things are not necessary in our lives. I avoid stores and restaurants that use these.
What is your #1 tip to reduce single-use plastics? Plan ahead! I keep a spork with me and always bring a reusable mug so I don’t need to worry about using single use plastic.
Name a local business or person you support because of their environmental practices. Canoe Brewpub has great food and drinks and they have a growler filling station! As a bonus, they are a Surfrider Approved Business! They also source much of their food locally.
