Volunteer Spotlight -Taylor Jenks
What’s your favourite outdoor activity? |
All of it! Thrashing around in the waves, wandering up a mountain, or taking the dog to the park. |
How long have you volunteered with Surfrider? |
Just about a year. |
Why did you become involved? |
A friend introduced me to Surfrider; Whether we surf or not so many of us enjoy the coast and we have so many opportunities to help protect it, plus the people are awesome! |
What was the last SFVI event you attended or volunteered at? |
Sombrio Beach Clean-Up, and before that was the “If By Sea,” film fest and auction. |
What is your favourite SFVI event/activity? |
Beach Clean-ups are always so amazing, seeing the number of people that come out and the amount of trash that at first seems hidden, but volunteers manage to find, is staggering! Plus any chance to get to the beach is a good day. |
What is the #1 thing you are doing to save our oceans? |
Trying my best to spread the word!! I encourage friends to enjoy the ocean so we can all appreciate what’s at stake. I leave no trace when I enjoy the outdoors, and take reusable containers to pick up lunch. |
What is your #1 tip to reduce single-use plastic use? |
Veggies like hanging out together, they don’t need individual plastic bags, just throw ‘em in the basket. Aluminum straws are also awesome! |
Name a local business you support because of their environmental practices? |
Mountain Equipment Co-op! They’ve been bag-free for years, they recycle old products through gear-swaps and repair programs, and I can get geared up to enjoy the outdoors! |
